I noticed today when I pulled up a page with a embedded YouTube video that it attempted to install a virus onto my machine. My Virus software, Ca Anti-Virus stopped the virus dead in its tracks, but YouTube has yet to resolve the issue.
The Virus is affecting embedded videos only and has no effect on the official YouTube site. In response, I have removed our latest embedded videos here at The State of Affairs. The virus attempts to install Antivirus 2009, which is supposedly malware.
Do not install any software from popups and make sure your antivius is up to date until this is all resolved. Hang tight for more updates as this could turn out to be just a false positive.
[Update]: YouTubeGoogle has responded and reports that the virus warning is a false positive (not really a virus) being reported by CA Anti-virus. CA is reportedly working on a update at the moment, but according to my software it has not released it yet.
[Update2]: CA has released a fix for the false positive. It is recommended that you update your software now. The fix was included with the Anti-virus data update v. 6840.0.0.0.

Hello,
We are getting the same error, but I’m having trouble finding any information on this CA issue on CA’s site. Where did you get your information from on Youtube\Google?

Doug, over at CrunchGear was in contact with Google over the issue. Apparently CA is working on the issue, but I updated to the latest release about 2 mins ago and the fix has still not been implemented.
Don’t use a crappy FP prone AV like CA and you won’t have that problem.
I got a free one year subscription from a promo exactly 12 months ago.
This was the first and only false positive I have seen in the past year, which is surprising because sometimes, like mr. linux_user points out, these non major players AV programs will cause a lot of them.
My license expires on 12/19/2008 and I think this is the first anti-virus program I will actually miss. Usually I just want them to go away.
i have the problem. (but im not sure if it is what your talking about) but the youtube virus is i cant watch youtube video’s i cant sign in and i cant press the more info button please give me advice to destroy this virus. if you know a certain download to heal it could you give me a link to it? Thanks, john
John, YouTube makes it virtually impossible to get a virus from watching a video online. I doubt that your problem is related, but I can suggest that if you do not have a virus scanner, there are some free online virus scanners that you can use. A good site to try is housecall.trendmicro.com/ also you can download a free program called Spybot Search-and-Destroy. Its a great program for weeding out those nasty little bugs.
