If you haven’t heard of The Thermals don’t worry, they are a new band to me too. After listening too the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/thethermals"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >4 songs they have on Myspace, I was hooked by their thought provoking lyrics and upbeat rock sound.

The Thermals are a 3 piece band, Kathy Foster, Hutch Harris, and Westin Glass, with a 5 piece band sound. Many bands are trying to stay in the forefront of music by going with a 5, 7, or 9 piece band, but the Thermals stay true and rock the classic 3 piece style.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best bands to arrive this decade. Just check out this lyrics excerpt from “Now We Can See” and then watch the video.

Now we can see
The warnings and the signs
Reading between the lines
like writing on the wall
Now we can see
What do we need
We should need nothing
Nothing at all
Yeaaah!

2008 has came and gone, but the great music and superb albums that came out last year will live on forever. Yes, it is true, not every album that was released last year will be etched in stone for future generations to see, but the ones that will, deserve the extra recognition now.

Wikipedia has a great list of all the popular records released in 2008 and I scanned through all of them to come up with this list. I am sure there are many self-released and indie records released in 2008 that should be on this list, so if you know of a album that is worthy, drop a comment below with the title and your personal review so we can expand this list past just 7 albums!

Ashes Divide – Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright

Ashes Divides debut release is not just one of the best albums of 2008, it is one of the best of all time records. The band is fronted by Billy Howerdel (A Perfect Circle guitarist) and features other notable musicians such as Josh Freese, Devo Keenan, and Johnette Napolitano.

The lyrics and sounds on this album both get a 10 in my book for originality and experimentation. This album is a easy hard rock album that anyone can enjoy. If you haven’t heard it yet, I highly recommend you check out Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright by Ashes Divide!

Serj Tankian – Elect the Dead

Elect the Dead is Serj Tankian’s (System of a Down) solo debut and embodies a album that is full of food for thought. If you like System, you will like this albums stance on hopes for social justice and positive reform.

This album, I feel, if more experimental than System, but by no means a replacement for all of their great albums. I look forward to Serj’s next record, seeing how it might be a while before System of a Down (possibly) reunites.

Scars on Broadway – (Self Titled)

Scars on Broadway is another part of System of a Down. It’s members are Daron Malakian on vocals, guitars, bass guitars, keyboards/organs/mellotrons and John Dolmayan on drums. Pending the possible reunion of System of a Down, Daron and John set out on their own to create a album that is not comparable to anything that I have heard to date.

Sometimes serious, sometimes not so serious, Scars on Broadway is a really awesome album and has some excitingly unique tracks on it. “Kill Each Other/Live Forever” is one example that characterizes a intriguing paradigm that any self-reflecting thinker should enjoy. Check it out if you missed this albums release last year.

In Flames – A Sense of Purpose

Wikipedia describes In Flames as a “Swedish melodic death metal band”, I just call them progressive rock. They have progressed and improved with every pressing album and they rock. Isn’t that what progressive rock is?

On A Sense of Purpose, In Flames is sticking to their new style that emerged with their last album Come Clarity. This is another great album from a band that has been making music for nearly 20 years now.

Nine Inch Nails – The Slip

The Slip is an amazing, thought provoking album that has probably the strongest line-up of musicians ever. Trent Reznor + Josh Freese + Robin Finck + Alessandro Cortini = absolute talent.

And did you know? It’s free to download. Not because they couldn’t use the money, but because they are just that @$#%ing cool. Actually it was a “present” to all of the fans that have supported NIN over the years, but I am going to remember it my own way. You can get the album right now, for free at NIN.com.

<a href="http://www.nin.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >More Info – www.nin.com

Nine Inch Nails – Ghosts I–IV

And yes NIN did release another album in 2008 that deserves just as much praise as “The Slip”. Ghost is a 4 disk set that is 100% instrumental and has some of the coolest sounding synthetics you will ever hear.

This was the first album from NIN since they ditch Interscope Records, so the album was released completely independent of a major label. More bands and musicians that are on Trent’s and NIN’s level should ditch their labels as well. All lables are good for is making and taking money, which has nothing to do with creating music.

The Nightwatchman – The Fabled City

The Fabled City is the second release from The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello of RATM and Audioslave) and continues to be one of the greatest protestresistance albums of the last 30 years.

Serj Tankian (of System of a Down), Shooter Jennings, and Perry Farrell (of Jane’s Addiction) all appear as guest on the album and help add some uniqueness to a lot of the tracks. It’s great to see inspiring music still is being released today. Sometime this year Street Sweeper, another band Tom is working with, is going to be releasing a new album so check that out or <a href="http://www.ninja2009.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >see Street Sweeper right now while they are on tour with Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction.

Since the dawn of the internet and file-sharing, record companies began to see major losses in their profits. With the new technology changing the world...

Since the dawn of the internet and file-sharing, record companies began to see major losses in their profits. With the new technology changing the world of music distribution, the actors involved have yet to adapt. So far we have seen various responses from musicians and record labels…

Integrating products, software, and forced paid downloading
Some software require a paid membership for unlimited downloads, while other companies such as Apple, produces an MP3 player that requires you to use the Itunes software in order to transfer music to the device. The hardware generates a demand for paid downloading. This is a merging of big corporations in technology and media.

Musicians cut out the middle man and distribute the music themselves
We have seen small “under ground” musicians who do their own promoting, distribution, and touring. In other words, the modern musician handles both the business and artistic sides of their band. We have also seen some big artists experimenting with the idea of adaptation, such as Nine Inch Nails. There are many online resources to do this with as well. This is a decentralized industry, and it comes with more competition.

Using television shows to build a market for music
We have seen the Naked Brothers Band, Hannah Montana, Cheetah Girls, and Jonas Brothers… they all came out of a Disney show, and once successful, they began to air music videos. Children are more likely to buy merchandise off of their favorite shows. This changes television to become key advertising for a product such as music.

Ad sponsored and paid memberships
This will provide the funds for reimbursing the record labels. This is a moderate change from the traditional structure of the music industry.

Destroying the community
Record companies can mass-upload blanks, viruses, and poor quality files to the major download sources. This will make the search more difficult and the paid downloading more appealing. Record companies can also file complaints to public uploading websites and threaten to shut down their operations.

So in the changing world, the music industry has yet to restructure itself while free music download is still flourishing. What will ensue out of the anarchy in the meantime should be interesting to watch. What has been successful so far? What has failed?

Another aspect that may prove interesting is the new technologies that may influence the future of music distribution (based off speculation and paranoia):

Music recognition software
Verizon Wireless has this new software that can recognize songs. It is currently being used to assist customers in searching for a song that they heard on the radio or etc., so that they can purchase and download it as a ringtone. This can also be potentially used for restricting music uploading on community-based uploading sites. That is, if the uploading process can also include a song or video recognition…

Re-implementing the old restrictions
Upload quality restrictions, file size restrictions, and file extension restrictions… however, it would not work without an organized effort between major websites, and even if they did group together, music downloading and streaming will simply de-centralize into a bunch of smaller sources.

Restricting internet access
This would be on internet service providers’ (ISP) part. This could benefit the bank accounts of ISPs, but would face resistance from those who support internet neutrality and global connectivity. This may also face opposition from those who feel that ISPs should not use their technological power in an inappropriate area (such as political and indirect influence on other industries).

Update! Don’t even bother reading this, just go <a href="http://www.joshfreese.com/"rel="nofollow" >buy Josh’s new album right now!

Josh Freese, the world renowned drummer from such bands as NIN, A Perfect Circle, and the Vandals, will be releasing a new album on March 24th titled “Since 1972″. One of the most interesting parts about his new release is the 8 different limited edition packages that will be available to buy on the 24th.

The LE packages range from $250 to $75,000 and all come with unique and excited “prizes”.

Here are some of the cooler “prizes” that come with certain packages.

For $250 dollars you get too go on a lunch date with Josh to PF Changs or The Cheesecake Factory.

With the $1000 package you get to have dinner with Josh aboard the “Queen Mary” in Long Beach, CA. Plus get drunk and cut each others hair in the parking lot of the Long Beach courthouse, which is also filmed and posted on YouTube.

For $10,000 you get to go with Twiggy and Josh to Roscoe’s Chicken n’ Waffle in Long Beach for dinner. Then you head off too “Club 33″ which is a exclusive and private restaurant in Disneyland above the Pirates Of The Caribbean. Oh and you get to drive away at the end of the day in Josh’s Volvo station wagon.

You have to see <a href="http://www.joshfreese.com/"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >the $75,000 package on Josh’s website for your self.

If these packages sound a bit too pricey, don’t worry, Josh though of that too. For $50 dollars you get a personal thank you over the phone from Josh and he even gives you a few minutes of his time to bull-shit with him.

I’m in. How about you?

Smash Mouth performed last night at the Snoqualmie Casino in a small ballroom-type venue. The intimate setting, funded by the casino’s promotional event, costed approximately 20-60 dollars a person. A half hour into the show, and the 800 seating capacity had not even been sold out yet; they apparently aren’t that great of a band.

A room mostly packed with people above the age of 35 – a handful were trying to dance, while most of the people stayed seated. The “rock stars” on stage did the rock star moves which were over-the-top in reflection to the crowd – their songs just don’t rock that much.

After about 45 minutes in, I finally recognized who they were. They were the ones in the 90s with that one hit single… which goes like this, “..might as well be walking on the sun”. As soon as they started playing that song, of course everyone stood up and started dancing. Yes! Finally (it spoke), this was the song we came to hear!

Then in the middle of the song, the lead singer decided to bring this peak moment to explain why he’s the shit. He tried to get these girls to come up on stage, calling them his new girlfriends. After some reluctance, they finally did… and then he told them to start dancing. “Who’s your daddy?” “You girls work for me now.” “I was gonna buy you a new car…”

Amazing how one hit single can bring enough financial success to where you can wash up onto a shore like Snoqualmie and act like an egotistical fuck. The so-called hit song has already lost its luster, buried beneath the big commercial tide. Funny thing is, the lead singer thinks he’s still the shit!!

The tour started yesterday, January 11th 2009, in Albuquerque, New Mexico and will end February 18th in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The last show they play with Combichrist will be February 14th in Atlanta, Georgia.

This will be a great show, so I recommend getting tickets early, as they are $15 in advance and $20 at the show. Black Light Burns is one of the best bands to emerge this decade and will be a show you won’t want to miss.

<a href="http://mixturtle.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" ><a href="http://mixturtle.com"rel="nofollow" target="_blank" >MixTurtle.com is a new music search website. Not quite like downloading discographies, this is anbsp; single track search engine. You can stream music off sourced websites, and it has multiple sources for the same song. Much like stumbleupon or google, except strictly for music.

So far, I’ve gotten pretty good results even in the foreign music arena. This is a pretty big one because it is difficult to find torrents for obscure bands. Combine this website with Firefox’s plugin “download helper”, and you can download songs to your collection.

Or you can add music to an online playlist… in case you are like me and have only 1 gigabyte left on your laptop, then this would be a good place to ‘store’ and archive the music you like.

Now with a great music search engine, we still have to pray that corporations won’t start unleashing dummy tracks like they did to Napster. However, as of right now, they’re doing well. As a search engine though, MixTurtle shouldn’t be running into any legal difficulties.

The other thing that can be a potential downer is broken links and speed. As we know search and stream speeds depends on volume of traffic.

I’ve been coming across a few “far out” song interpretations out there on the internet, and I thought maybe you’d be curious as to how far some people have traveled from the general consensus. I hope you will find this entertaining!

3. Stairway to Heaven song meaning by sunsetwestproductions.com

The writer there believes that the song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin is about Christianity. His reason for beginning on this train of thought begins with this: he says,

“many times when I perform “Stairway to Heaven” I feel the Holy Spirit. Could it be that somehow God used another heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin, to glorify Jesus Christ and Heaven for masses of teenagers. It seems that British school boys know a lot more about Christianity than their American counterparts.”

To further his intuition, he also supplements his reasoning with this by pointing out the lyric “because you know sometimes words have 2 meanings”. He or she goes on to argue that even though Led Zeppelin is a band full of sinners, that the song is not evil. Here, we see an appeal to the Christian community, but not the general community. Therefore, to me it is not convincing even from his first statement. There is no context of Christianity here.

“Isn’t it funny that every year since it was new, Stairway to Heaven has been the number one rock song every time that a rock radio station plays their all time greatest, most requested songs. That’s pretty amazing, in fact it’s a miracle! Truly it is. I mean, do you think God would let Highway to Hell be number one? Well, maybe if God wanted to use it as a warning. But God, being a good, friendly, and loving God would rather do a little positive reinforcement and use a positive song after all…. “

So now, with the conclusion, he or she thinks that God caused the song’s success for his glory. Here is an excerpt for lyrics interpretations, line by line. To read the complete interpretation breakdown, visit http://www.sunsetwestproductions.com/forever/stairway.htm

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven. (she is tithing)
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for. (The bible is the word of God, with the bible, she can get into Heaven.) Revelation 3:8
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven. (She is tithing and she she thinks that will get her into Heaven)

There’s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure (points out the significance of the next line, hint hint)
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. (parables, which the bible is full of, and the words in this song have two meanings)
In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings, (reference to John the Baptist and Jesus)
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiving.
Ooh, it makes me wonder, (think!)
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

2. Judas Priest interpretation by various plaintiffs (mothers of boys who committed suicide)

Perhaps some of you may have heard of the suicides of teenagers from listening to Judas Priest albums. In court, it was claimed that subliminal messages were found in the album when it was played backward, and this activated suicidal impulses. Yeah, I know, doesn’t make sense.

In one example, in the song “Better by you Better than me” they say the words “do it”, and these words urged the boys to kill themselves. It would take somebody already suicidal to receive encouragement from these words without taking account the surrounding lyrics.

Judas Priest wasn’t the only rock band under trial, but these cases are important in legal history because it will influence the future of free speech, crack pot science, and the views on the subliminal perception.

So far as I know, there was no success in the trial for the plaintiffs (whew!!!) But in the past there has been a lot of precedence for crack pot science… such as in 1986, a Philadelphia jury awarded a woman $900,000 because a CAT scan ruined her psychic abilities. (New York Times, March 29, 1986). And of course, an “expert doctor” was there to support her case. Anyway, that’s a whole ‘nother story.

1. Helter Skelter by Charles Manson

This is probably the worst misinterpretation out there in the history of Rock ‘n Roll. Charles Manson and family took the Beatles’ album and read it as a prophecy. Manson thought that the Beatles were sending them a message about “Helter Skelter”, where the blacks would rise up and destroy all the whites. The family was supposed to go to this underground city while this was happening, and come back out to rule the blacks when it was over. They were also supposed to initiate the Helter Skelter, by murdering a bunch of people.

Charles Manson was the lead interpretor, and he infused the Beatles’ lyrics with the book of Revelations from the Bible. Manson also believed that he was the second coming of Christ.

Here is a sample of the interpretation taken from Wikipedia:
The song Rocky Raccoon:
Rocky Raccoon means “coon,” vulgar term for a black man

Of all the Beatles songs known to have been connected with Helter Skelter, this is the only one that mentions the Bible. (It is possibly the only Beatles song at all that mentions the Bible.) A play on the Gideons International practice of leaving Bibles in hotel rooms, the references are to a Bible left in the room of the title character by a “Gideon”:

So one day [Rocky Raccoon] walked into town/ Booked himself a room in the local saloon/ Rocky Raccoon/ Checked into his room/ Only to find Gideon’s Bible… Now Rocky Raccoon/ He fell back in his room/ Only to find Gideon’s Bible/ Gideon checked out/ And he left it no doubt/ To help with good Rocky’s revival.

Manson made the connection. In the period before his trial, he was visited at the Los Angeles County Jail by David Dalton and David Felton, who were preparing a Rolling Stone story, about him, that appeared in the magazine in June 1970. In an article in the October 1998 issue of the periodical Gadfly, Dalton, recounting the visit to Manson, relayed the remarks Manson made to Felton and him about “Rocky Raccoon”:

“Coon,” said Charlie. “You know that’s a word they use for black people. You know the line, ‘Gideon checked out/ And left no doubt/ To help good Rocky’s revival.’ Rocky’s revival — re-vival. It means coming back to life. The black man is going to come into power again. ‘Gideon checks out’ means that it’s all written out there in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelations [sic].”

These bad interpretations come mainly from insanity. If these people knew anything about the bands listed here, their interpretations would not make sense. Another thing is that there is no context for their interpretation – it’s just that they saw what they wanted to believe.
