google chrome1 300x230 Google Chrome: The Feature Lite BrowserGoogle Chrome is the newest browser to hit the web. Chrome could be described as the feature-less browser, but in reality it is the feature-lite browser.

Internet Explorer is bloated and heavy to load as always. Firefox is fast and lite until we load our favorite addons and plugins. Chrome is ultra lite and will stay that way.

    Features I like

  • Application shortcuts – Allows the user to place links to Google Apps on the desktop.
  • Chrome Task Manager – Adds the the ability to see the amount of memory and Cpu being used by individual tabs. Each tab runs independently so if one tab crashes it won’t crash them all.
  • Dynamic Tabs – Allows the user to create tabs easily and move them around more freely then Firefox and IE.

I personally use Firefox and do not plan on switching to Chrome any time soon. Reason one would be the lack of features in Chrome. No status bar, very little customization, and the simple lack of a home button. You technically do not need a home button with Chrome as you can search from the address bar directly, but when I want to see my homepage I don’t want to have to search for it. You can make a simple bookmark to your favorite homepage but I can do that with any browser and still have a home button.

In defense of Chrome, it provides and does what it was designed truly to be, an ultra lite, fast and easy to use Internet browser. The user is not overwhelmed with lots of buttons and options to complicate the experience and will help you find what you need with a simple search in the address bar.

In time, if addons and other plugins are developed for Chrome then it could become a standard browser. As of now it’s not for the power user, but more for the average user.

  1. At first my firefox bookmarks could not be “copied” to Chrome….. I fixed that one…
And then I read about an Google using it to see what people are browsing for….. Mmmh dunno – bit of privacy I would like…..

    (btw – got ya homepage bookmarked – really like it….. – specially because ya writing about my favourites = music(studio) – internet – politics…. ;) )

It does have a status bar (doesn’t go all the way across horizontally, though), but it simply saves screen space by not appearing until you mouse over a link or click one. Notice how Firefox’s status bar only shows the useless “Done” message when you’re not performing some action (some extensions add buttons there as well). Why not hide it during idle time to save a little screen space? ;)

I see what you are saying about it saving space. I just happen to be one of those people that has about 4 extensions that add buttons on the Firefox status bar and I use them constantly. It’s a good idea if you don’t have any extensions so it fits Chrome nicely. Thanks for the input!
