Target’s Applicant Questionnaire – the “Ideal Candidate”

September 13th, 2008 Rachel NewsOpinion Articles 2 Comments

I’m sure that it is not only Target who quizzes applicants in order to get a sample of his or her personality. In fact, many big stores and companies who are hiring general labor are beginning to add a personality test as a part of their application.

Some of these questions are no brainers, such as “Do you smoke Marijuana?” Well, as one may guess, if you answer “yes” to that question, chances are you aren’t going to get hired. Here are some other ones that may amuse you. The questions have answers that are multiple choice as well as true/false.

  1. What percentage of politicians do you believe tell lies?
  2. What percentage of people do you think cheat on their taxes?
  3. Most people would steal if they knew they could get away with it.
  4. How do you compare with your friends in terms of confidence?
  5. How do you compare with your friends in terms of success?
  6. On a scale of 1-10, how rebellious are you?
  7. What do you do when you disagree?
  8. If someone treats you unfairly, how do you react?
  9. Are you more of a dreamer or rational thinker?
  10. When learning a skill, how well do you perform it compared with other people?
  11. How do you compare with other people in terms of optimism?
  12. What kind of a goal setter are you?
  13. How do you feel about working at a fast paced and hectic environment?

These are just some of the sample questions that are on the Target application. I’m sure after reading this, one can get a picture of their “ideal worker”.

The multiple choice responses were quite interesting too, because some people don’t belong in either extreme of “goody two shoes” or “total rebel”; of “optimism” or “pessimism”; or etc.

Anyway, hope you enjoy!

I’ve read that the trick to passing the pre-employment questionnaire is to always pick the extreme answers (either
extreme) because they want people who can make up their mind. Also, I’ve read that you should indicate with your answers that you would deal with difficult customers/customer complaints yourself as much as possible, before going (“whining”) to your supervisor. For a really good (I think) article on this subject, visit Ehow.com’s article on the subject.
