WordPress 2.7 has finally been released and this version is bearing the the name of legendary Jazz musician, John Coltrane. I am excited about this release and very eager to try it out, but not too eager as I will explain below.
Reason 1 – Plugins
WordPress is a great core blog manager and makes blogging as easy as pie. Plugins are what takes WordPress to that new level though, the CMS level that is. Without plugins WordPress would be kind of bland and most sites would have identical features. Thankfully WordPress has been designed to make plugin integration quite a breeze for the plugin writers and the plugin users.
Lots of testing goes into seeing what plugins work with 2.7 and what ones don’t right now. Unfortunately you have to release a product to the general public to really see what makes or breaks a WordPress installation. With that being said, I plan on waiting a few weeks to give some time to the plugin developers so they can be sure that their plugin will still work with this version of WordPress.
Reason 2 – 2.6.X Still Works
Right now my installation of WordPress is working just fine. I rank high for keywords in Google, my post display correctly, and my settings are right where I want them.
If I were to upgrade tonight, I would be going into that “expect anything zone”. My eagerness says, “do it, you know you want to”, but my conscious says, “there will be a time, 2.7 will still be there tomorrow.
Reason 3 – Patience is a Virtue
If you were to build a car and that said car took you almost a year too build, would you change out the old, perfectly good, working engine, for a new one that could possible make your entire car explode?
Now that may be a over exaggeration seeing how you can’t back-up you car (or can you?), but the picture I am trying to point out is that statistically speaking, there will be some percent of us WordPress users out there who will have nothing but trouble getting WordPress 2.7 to work. Also statistically speaking the longer we wait, the more likely out installation will go flawlessly.
Don’t listen too me
The reason I say don’t listen to me is the fact that if everybody was to follow these ideas we would never see any improvements in WordPress, because there would be no widespread testing. That is why we should all be thankful for all of the beta testers and the people taking the high dive and jumping right in to WordPress 2.7. (If that is you, I look forward to reading your review :)
If your a new blogger, I definitely recommend you download WordPress 2.7 for two reasons. One, WordPress 2.7 looks to be the most straight forward version of WordPress to date and two, the design and layout of WordPress 2.7 is going to be around for a while, so it makes sense to get comfortable with it’s style instead of starting back at 2.6.
There are many good reasons to upgrade to 2.7 and many reasons for it being worth a wait, what are your plans for 2.7?
